The next generation main Pokemon game!
Pokemon Sun & Moon takes place in the tiny carefree region of Alola
(not Hawaii, what is Hawaii?) where you, the protagonist, arrive to from
Kanto.
In this region, there is no Pokemon League and thus Gyms are also
non-existent. Instead, there are a series of “Trials” that the younger
generation can undertake as a sort of coming-of-age journey.
In these Trials, you perform a series of tasks then confront the mighty
Totem Pokemon at the end to earn your Z-Crystals and lift the barricades
blocking you from moving into the next areas. At the end of each
island, you will also be confronted with a Grand Trial by the island
Kahuna in order to move to the next island. (Some areas also have hidden
Z-Crystals of the types that do not have a Trial for them…like Guzma’s
Bug Z-Crystal collection or the Z-Crystal in the Haina Desert)
HMs are non-existent in this game. Instead, you have what is called
Ride Pokemon. You get this pager and you can call a Pokemon to do stuff
like smashing rocks (Rock Smash), swimming (Surf), and help you reach
distant places (Fly).
This frees your move slots and you don’t need a HM slave.
Along with the native species of Alola, some Pokemon that were
brought into the region from the nearby Kanto have formed their own
versions called Alolan Forms through the concept of Allopatric Speciation
(Speciation caused by isolation of a population, who may then evolve
its own distinct characteristics from its parent species over time)
An example of this is the Alolan Meowth, who’s ancestors had a royal
upbringing somehow caused its descendants to change their form…somehow
Another is the Alolan Vulpix and Sandshrew, who have adapted to their
new snowy environment around Mount Lanakila and have thus formed new
ice-based characteristics separate from their warm-skinned counterparts
in Kanto.
